Social media and online marketing gives businesses an incredibly powerful platform to reach millions of people around the world. Every Facebook post or tweet on Twitter is visible to several million people, but like anything else, there is always a catch.

In the case of social media and online marketing, the catch is that seemingly small mistakes can turn out to be disastrous for your brand identity. Here are a few mistakes you should be careful to avoid.

Lack of interaction

The internet, especially social media, is meant for interactions. Not interacting with others simply means that you are not using the platform to its fullest extent, and it can not only result in poor brand imaging but also ruin whatever identity you do build. You need to interact, and this means taking time to communicate and also responding to those who communicate with you. Offer something insightful and relevant when you talk to people online and you will slowly but surely build an audience.

Not being authentic

For decades, marketing has always been about pushing products to consumers and showcasing its best side. However, building a brand today involves more than just this. You need to be transparent and real in your approach in order to connect with them personally. For this reason, it is best to be active on social media yourself or get an in-house team to handle social media updates instead of handing the responsibility to an unrelated third party.

Thinking of social media marketing as traditional marketing

Social media and traditional marketing are part of the same process, but that is pretty much where the similarities end. Social media marketing focuses on the conversation rather than the product/service. In fact, you could build a strong brand identity for your business online and through social media without even offering your products online.

Not handling criticism

On the internet, everyone is a critic and you can hear and read the criticisms of each person. Some of the criticism may be valid, some may be hateful, and some may be hard to tell. In any case, you need to be able to handle it as and when it comes while maintaining your professionalism. One unprofessional or inappropriate response can seriously harm your brand credibility and identity.


Another major mistake that most businesses make is that they do not attempt to develop their brand online consistently. They may launch an ambitious social media campaign for a few months or a year and then fade away. After a couple of months, they will appear again with another big campaign. However, brand building on the internet is seldom done through big programs. It happens gradually over a sum of efforts. In order to build a successful brand online, you need to be consistent in your efforts and work constantly. It may take time to see some results, but it does happen. Remember to stay active on social media and other online platforms so that you do not lose brand recognition. Stagnancy is one of the biggest challenges of brand marketing on the internet.

By incorporating these simple tips will help you build a brand identity online that you can be proud of and your visitors will want to take an active part in helping you build.
