How often should I be updating my website?

Is your businesses success important to you? How important of a role is your website playing in its success? If you answered YES and VERY to both questions then read this closely.

If you answered YES and NOT REALLY… turn off the television, silence the ringer on your phone and really pay close attention.

Many companies spend a lot of money making sure the physical aspects of their business are well kept and updated regularly. Roof repairs, landscaping, exterior paint and new carpet are all things that a business may work hard to stay on top of. Business owners are proud of what they have built and want to project a positive image of themselves and their company to their employees and to their clients.

However, some business owners when asked when was the last time your website design or content was updated, you hear the long pause followed by the “I’m not really sure.”

It isn’t totally uncommon to find reputable companies that provide excellent products and services that have websites that haven’t been updated for 5 years or more. Somehow the business owners and decision makers falling into this category have somehow convinced themselves that their business isn’t impacted by having the website they have. But the real truth, your businesses is absolutely being impacted by your website and you hold the power to control whether its impact is a positive or negative one.

So what is the small-business rationale not to act?

“It’s going to cost too much.”

Well it can’t cost too much if the time isn't taken to find out exactly what the services specific to your needs will cost. Remember, there is no cost in exploring possibilities but you may be leaving a substantial amount of money on the table in lost opportunities for your business.

“I’m really busy, and I don’t have time to spend on this right now.”

That is the equivalent of saying I don’t have any time to invest in something willing to promote my business, products and services 24 hours a day 7 days a week that isn’t asking for a paycheck or benefits!

What some business owners don’t likely want to hear is that their presence on the web should be given as much attention as reasonably possible. Why? It’s good for your business when you provide an attractive website that is easy to navigate with the information your visitors want to see in order to do business with you.

With the Internet changing so rapidly if you aren’t staying current in these areas you are missing critical foundational steps which will make it exponentially more expensive and time consuming once you come to the realization that you need to use the Internet’s capabilities more effectively if you want your business to succeed into the future.

It can be argued that some of the biggest brands in the world that dominated in so many areas due to their lagging in their Internet strategy contributed greatly in converting them to shadows of their former self or in some cases pushed them right into non-existence. If this can happen to some of the biggest names in the business, what would make a small-business think it is somehow isolated or shielded from the same fate against their competitors?

The Internet can be a powerful tool in your quest to build a stronger and more profitable business that can withstand future challenges as they come. Every small business should have a plan that ensures them that their web design and content stays current despite the dynamic nature of their business and industry and optimizes that content to improve your presence and positioning online.
