Mobilegeddon - April 21, 2015

Mobilegeddon April 21, 2015 Fact of Fiction?

Mobilegeddon April 21, 2015 Are You Ready?

Well for those that may have been living off the grid for the last several months you may not have heard. There is a so-called impending doom dubbed, Mobilegeddon, scheduled to happen on April 21.

Who comes up with these names? Lol.

Well it caught our attention enough to want to chime in on the subject so someone deserves a few gold stars for that.

Is this truly the last showdown between good and evil, now fought on the pages of the world’s most popular search engine? Google.

Let us take a closer look at the statement made as part of an announcement by Google.

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.“

So despite all the murmurings of web developers, bloggers and even industry experts it seems quite clear that Google obviously understands what we all do that have a mobile device and or a website. We use mobile for search and the analytics have shown growing numbers of traffic from smartphones and tablets for some time. Google Analytics for those using it has allowed us to see the breakdown easily of this growing segment for those looking at the reports.

As frugal as Google is with their website space, it really did not take a rocket scientist to understand when Google began showing Mobile-Friendly tags in mobile search results that this was something important to Google. They were noticing and felt it important to share it with the search community about all the websites they index.

So how does one know if their website meets Google’s standards of being mobile-friendly?

Google provides a simple Mobile-Friendly Test you can use to check your website now to find out.

So does this mean if your website is not mobile-friendly black suburban’s bearing Google insignias will pull in front of your business on April 21 and haul out your top executives like an Enron scandal while the television cameras roll? Not likely. However, it does merit significant consideration especially if a measurable amount of your businesses success comes by way of the Internet.

Very few of us have such a monopoly on our industries that we can force our customers to cater to the businesses needs opposed to our businesses catering to theirs. You have likely spent good money on attractive web design, search engine optimization and possibly even paid Internet advertising. To deny your visitors a mobile-friendly website for the growing numbers of people that will visit is like cutting off a finger because your gloves are a little too tight.

Does this mean you need to risk bankrupting your business to make this happen before the April 21 deadline? Of course not. However, it is something that should be on your calendar, as you will likely be playing catch up to some if not most of your competition.

Google for most of us is a very important component of our online business, but getting the Mobile-Friendly tag in a mobile search result to your website should be the minimum goal. This should be more about putting the same emphasis on how great your website looks on desktop for your mobile visitors and their devices as well.

At the end of the day, it is just smart business. Especially end-of-day April 21, 2015.

Hope to see you in Google Mobile Search on April 22!

Good Luck and Happy Selling!
